Recently WhatsApp Bans Over 80 Lakh Indian Accounts(8 million) in October 2024. As part of its ongoing battle against rising online scams and platform abuse. The move aims to ensure a safer environment for its users by cracking down on accounts that violate its terms of service or engage in illegal activities.
Key Reasons for the WhatsApp Ban
The accounts were primarily banned for the following reasons.
1. Bulk messaging and spam: Many accounts were identified for sending bulk or spam messages, often the first sign of scam-related activities.
2. Illegal operations: WhatsApp also targets accounts involved in activities that violate Indian laws, such as fraudulent schemes.
3. User complaints: Some accounts were flagged and thereon banned based on reports from users—those who experienced harassment or other inappropriate behavior.
WhatsApp’s Scam Detection System & User Complaints
WhatsApp uses automated systems like machine learning and data analytics. It helps to monitor and detect suspicious behavior on its platform. Out of the 8 million banned accounts, 1.9 million were proactively banned. Meaning, they were removed before users made any complaints. These systems are designed to spot problematic accounts during registration and messaging activities, ensuring prompt action.
In addition to its proactive banning measures, WhatsApp also handled 10,707 complaints from users in October 2024. These complaints ranged from issues like ban appeals to safety concerns. While WhatsApp received numerous reports, it took action on 93 of these cases, which included banning or restoring accounts based on the situation.
Strengthened Security Features & Compliance with IT Rules
Apart from banning accounts, WhatsApp has also enhanced user privacy features. One of its latest updates includes the introduction of a secret code feature** that allows users to lock private conversations with personalized passwords or biometric authentication.
WhatsApp’s actions align with India’s IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, which require platforms to take strict measures to protect users from abuse. The Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC), recently introduced by the Indian government, also plays a role in reviewing user appeals regarding content or account actions.
This large-scale ban reflects WhatsApp’s commitment to safeguarding its users. Especially in India, where it serves millions of people daily. By taking stringent action against abusive accounts, WhatsApp aims to reduce online scams and maintain a trustworthy platform for communication.
